Childhood
Wangari was born in Nyeri, Kenya on April 1, 1940. She grew up in a small colony called Ihithe. She is from one of the most populous ethnic Kenyan groups called Kikuyu. Later on in her childhood she relocated to a white farm in the Rift Valley in 1943. By 1947 she returned to live in Ihithe.
Education
At just 11 years old Wangari began studying at a boarding school. While attending St. Cecilia's she became fluent in English. Wangari graduated first in her class and was granted emission into Lorento High School Limuru. She received a scholarship to attend Mount St. Scholastica College. During her time her she majored in Biology with minors in chemistry and German. She furthered her career in Biology and received her masters degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Wangari still continued advancing her career and received a doctorate in Veterinary Anatomy from the University of Giessen.
Jobs
Wangari was a research assistant for Professor Reinhold Hoffman at University of Giessen. She later became an entrepreneur and started her own general store in Kenya. Wangari later closed the store and began working as an assistant lecturer at the University College of Nairobi. Although Wangari had no political experience she received a spot on the Kenyan Parliament and Assistant Minister of Environmental, Natural Resources, and Wildlife.
